Abandoned Pillbox
This abandoned and disused WW2 Pillbox in Barcombe sits on the edge of the Sussex Downs Park and it is a Pillbox Type 24 (Shell-proof) A242. One of hundreds that were built during WW2. It is interesting and all that and I see at least one every day during my travels.
But I have to say that even though this Pillbox in Barcombe near Lewes commands spectacular views of Lewes and the downs, I feel there is something missing at this world war II pillbox for me apart from the views. Maybe that’s the point! Solo Visit.
WW2 Pillbox Information
A WW2 Pillbox or pillboxes are concrete dug-in guard posts, normally equipped with loopholes through which to fire weapons. The originally jocular name arose from their perceived similarity to the cylindrical and hexagonal boxes in which medical pills were once sold. They are in effect a trench firing step hardened to protect against small-arms fire and grenades and raised to improve the field of fire.
