Winterbourne Tunnel 2
Not abandoned or derelict but it still fits under the urbex umbrella. This is the tunnel that takes the Winterbourne (Winter Stream) for around 500 yards under the western end of Lewes in Sussex, (A Winterbourne = Winter Stream (Old English) is typically found on chalk or limestone, which flows only after wet weather) During the wet season it carries at least two very fast flowing streams and the storms drains also empty into it.
It looks original, 1950s perhaps but is showing early signs of collapse in places as the roof is nearly flat reducing the height to around 5 feet or less, It is mainly around 5.5 feet in diameter inside whilst the two concrete tunnels feeding it are about 4 feet in diameter. I believe the left tunnel leads towards Kingston and Woodingdean and the right tunnel leads towards Houndean and Plumpton.
You only have to look at the state of the metal grill at the exit to imagine the amount and force of the water rushing through from the hills. Again I had dreadful problems with condensation, focusing, lighting and the water vapour (Mist) from our breathing plus it was about 24c outside but only about 14c inside. Also it was super pitch black in there and we kept bashing our heads on the bolts and roof! Visited with my Son in Law.
