Abandoned Hotel
This is the Lansdowne Place Hotel which had collapsed into administration on January 1st 2013 owing £16,000 to people who had booked functions at the hotel, including weddings, £10,000 to people who had bought gift vouchers, £205,864 to the Taxman and around £9 million to its bank.
This building was built around 1830 as a terrace of six grand houses which was known as the Lansdowne Mansions, One of which was known as Dudley House, which by 1851 was a private boarding school and run by Prideaux Richards.
But by 1854 the school was gone and by 1866 the property was being run as a boarding house and by 1878 it was known as the Dudley Mansion Boarding House.
Over the following years however, It expanded, changed hands, names and gradually took over the rest of the Lansdowne Mansion Houses and emerged as the Dudley Hotel in the 1880s.
It was renamed as the Lansdowne Place Hotel in 2004 after a £3 million investment. But sadly it was not enough and things started going downhill until 2013 when it finally closed and was put on the market for £8 million.
Its contents were sold at an Auction in June 2013. Planning permission was granted for the conversion of the hotel to 45 homes but that went tits up. Sad history for a seaside hotel where Ian Fleming wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and included Noel Coward and Sir Winston Churchill as guests.
