Abandoned Tooling Factory
Incorporated 1919. Clare were the forerunners of modern milling cutter geometry as is now known and accepted; although reproduced by competitors we still take credit for – grinding of flutes in 1940, 35 Helix 3 fl routers in 1955.
Cone drive milling cutters in 1960, also Cobalt cutters. We still use EN36J Nickel Chrome in the manufacturing of our chucks, thus allowing the system to retain its concentricity and out last any other current systems.
In January 1984, a new range of CNC manufactured cutters was introduced all of which have controlled ground leads. This important feature is now carried out on all Clare milling cutters, from 1/2 to 3 in. dia.
New multigrip collets to fit existing chucks are also introduced accepting five options of shanks – Clare – Threaded – Whistle Notch – Flatted – Morse. These recent introductions are ‘backed up’ by a full range of Vee flange tooling in CAT/ANSI,BT,ISO,VMC etc.
Clare is the name that has stood the test of 70 years, from simple jobbing shop milling to sophisticated electronic and aerospace demands. Utterly reliable products in the right place at the right time.
If its milling its got to be Clare, Clare Tooling Systems Limited, Excelsior Works, Manchester.
Knowing my Wife had chosen a dream holiday that was only available from Manchester Airport which was a good 250 mile drive away, I suggested that we travel up early the day before, so we could sleep the night before in a Chainy B/B only minutes from Manchester Airport and explore some of the area!
From what I saw as I drove into Manchester from the East, Was that there is shed loads of possible mooches but in a very suspect areas! Clare Tooling was my target from the outset though.
Went to the wrong building at first and got confused so decided to go back to the car and get our bearings, Whilst sitting in the car though I noticed a breached hardboard doorway.
I said to my Wife “Sod It, Lets Have A Peep In There” By the time we had got to the second floor I realised that we were in the Clare Milling Factory. “Result” Visited with my Wife. Now partly collapsed.
